Story

Ms. Terry Bernstein, a young but not-very-devout Jewish woman, finds her life irrevocably changed when she discovers a valuable painting hanging in the home of her fiancee's parents - a painting stolen from her grandparents by the Third Reich in 1939.

The discovery unlocks Terry's ethnic and cultural identities as she and her fianceeês family, the socially prominent Whitestones, struggle over the painting and what it represents. Each tries to understand what is right, what is just, and decide who is responsible for what others have done half a century ago.

About This Play

"Stolen Memories" confronts the issues of ethnic legacies, contemporary social relationships and the ethics involved in facing historical atrocities.

The play illustrates how our cultural memory can surprise us. What seems to be unimportant in contemporary times can ultimately affect our personal choices.

How do we balance the legacies from the past with our hopes for the
future?

"Stolen Memories" was showcased by Love Creek Productions in New York City and was selected by the Edward Albee and South Carolina Playwright's Conferences. It also won the One-Act Marathon at the Attic Theatre in Los Angeles.
